Going to Ios

Today said good-bye to Naxos and took the ferry to Ios. We both really like Naxos. It is a beautiful island and we stayed in a really nice part of the island.

We started the day going to the coffee shop on the beach and getting breakfast. We really liked this place. The family who runs it is nice and it was a great location.
After breakfast we checked out and got a taxi to the port. While waiting for the ferry to show up, two couples behind us started chatting with each other and it turned out they were both from Boston and lived in Brookline just a few blocks apart.

The ferry to Ios is about 35 minutes (high speed ferry). Ios has a completely different feel than Naxos. The port area is very small and is built on a sheltered bay. The main town is up above the port in the hills.

A drive from our hotel, Homers Inn, met us in the port. We checked into our hotel, which is very nice, and then changed and walked back down to the port for lunch and the beach (on the bay). The beach was very nice and the water was a little bit warmer than in Naxos.

After the beach we changed and walked up the hill to Chora, the main town on Ios. The town is built on the hills. If has the quaint little streets (no cars, just feet) and there are lots of shops. We found a nice restaurant at the top of one of the hills, called the Mills. It is called that because there are 4 windmills. We asked about the mills and learned that they used them until the late 80’s.

The food was excellent. Pam ordered an Aubergine appetizer that was amazing. We got pita and an olive tapenade that was really good. The service was good and the food was good….we were very happy with our selection!
